Bermuda is less than two hour flying time from the east coast of the U.S. and Canada. There are historical ties between Bermuda and the founding of the first American colonies. Particularly, the early settlement of the Virginia Colony, when the ship-wreck of the Sea Venture on Bermuda’s reefs occurred - on its way to the New World.
This ultimately, indirectly led to the settlement of Bermuda. The island played a significant role in helping to provide supplies to the new colonies. There are also important accounts of Bermuda’s involvement in the US Civil War, and the importance of the of the ‘Gun Powder Plot’ etc.
The island played a role in the early settlement and in this important period of America’s history. High school and college students studying early American history could be encouraged to visit the Island to learn more about these eras of American history and Bermuda’s important involvement and connections.
